A man has just approached you with a briefcase. He explains that there is Eighty Thousand dollars in the briefcase and that it's all yours, but... there's predictably a catch. He says, "You can only spend it on a car and you've only got one hour to spend it." Because, he adds, after an hour the money expires - any change you've got left over makes like the stage coach and turns back into a pumpkin.
He looks at you, starts a timer and says, "Go!"
Authors Edit:
Here's my answer; Cadillac CTS-V in Black Diamond. It's a 2012 Sportwagon sitting at a dealership in town. They're asking $65K, so I'd drop the additional change on a second set of tires and wheels, right there. Bam. Done. It's this one:

Lexus LS460. DONE.
Enjoy my old man taste in cars Jalopnik. I'd give you all a hug too, but I'm 18 and I sound like my 401k is about to mature.

The man with the briefcase approves, too.

Head to the nearest Chevy dealership, buy a C7 Stingray.
Screw the change.

I'm just sayin; do you even think you could buy them all within the space of an hour?
I'm not so sure.

$70K car and $10k to throw at the dealer to motivate them to finish the paperwork in a reasonable time. {rolls of dimes}
Lotus Exige. Or a Cayman S.

1. Buy 2014 Corvette
2. Drive it around for a bit
3. Sell it.
4. Buy more cars.

Top trim, all options... plus a few Corvette accessories from the dealership "lifestyle" shelf; hat, jacket, key fob...

It's cash.
If that's not reason enough to motivate the dealership, change sellers!

I like that line of thinking as it's not about exploiting the situation for riches, but getting yourself the up-to-$80K car-of-your-dreams.

Is that possible from where you are? I mean, you'd have enough change to maybe bribe the cops that'd be pulling you over.
Haha! Great pick.

You could get a private sale car in the same space of time, say if you knew where the car you wanted was sitting and waiting for you and you could just be like, "Here's ten more grand then you were asking. We make this happen now !"

I'd never pay the asking price if it was my money, but in this case? Sure:

Papadopoulos always charges a mint for his inventory, but he makes it seem worth the ask. Also pretty close; I could hop an LIRR train and conceivably be out there in time.

You think you could find the car, loaded how you're wanting, sitting on a dealership somewhere within one hour?
I mean, I suppose you could have the paperwork done in under an hour and then wait for your car but that seems like cheating. Hah.
![]() 01/02/2014 at 19:57 |

Probably not but I know someone with a private plane that I could throw the change at for a ride ;)

I work right down the street from a Jag dealer. I just browsed their inventory and, as you suspected, didn't find an XF anywhere near what I wanted.
I did find this '13 XJ 3.0 S/C AWD , though. $77,970 MSRP. So I'd take that. That interior is...wow.

Yup. I'd be tempted to get the base F-Type roadster they have. But it's black and with just 2 seats, not an everyday car.
The XJ AWD is an everyday car.

Would def have to peruse all the online lots. In a couple quick searches found a 2005 Aston Martin DB9 for $76k. Would also be happy with a myriad of 911s, s4/5, m series, etc. But the AM is something different

I thought the standard amount of cash one suitcase holds is a million dollars? In any case, I'd take my $80k in self-destructing cash and buy a C7 Corvette, Z51 package with magneto shocks.

See my answer and you'll see I agree.
![]() 01/02/2014 at 20:29 |

You'd look at the pre-owned, private-sale, under $80K market on the day and go from there, kind of thing? I get that. My wife loves these puzzlers and she'll ask me things like, "If you have forty three thousand dollars to spend on a car..." And my answers almost always consist of a few if's or maybe's or what-if's but come down to, "It'd depend what was available at the time."
Right now, the Caddy I posted/edited above is for sale at a GM dealership in their pre-owned department. It was the first one I ever touched, in the flesh, and now it's for sale but up here in Canada they command pretty strong premiums unlike California or Florida and so even a pre-owned CTS-V Sportwagon is rare.

I said to another Oppo that while it's not really cheating it's also not really in the spirit of the question to settle with being able to sign the paperwork in an hour, but to have the car in hand. I mean, if you could find the car sitting at a dealership, no big deal... but if the hour only allowed to you to pay for an ordered car, that's technically cool but... yeah. Anyway, the C7 is a popular pick and I have no doubt you could find one within an hour, but would it be spec'd the way you'd want or not? Know what I'm saying?
![]() 01/02/2014 at 20:41 |
|
I think I would at least start there and see what's available. More spice and variety that way, plus potential for an awesome 100-120k car slightly used.

Go immediately to Porsche dealer and buy whatever they have in that price. Haggle, no.

I'd buy my dads S65 AMG off him and tell him to keep the change, because, ya know, I probably owe him a lot more anyway. Book value is under $80k.

A quick browse of my local craigslist yielded no interesting results in that range. I'd have to get creative. I'm thinking I'd buy a car from a friend of mine for "80 grand". Said friend holds all the money for awhile, makes sure it doesn't destruct, and then after I'm out of the watchful eyes of said mysterious money man, I "sell the car back" for the same 80 grand. Now I'm holding non-self destructive money, and can spend it however i'd like.
80 grand would buy me a nice 67 Chevelle with an LS7 swapped in. Just need time to either find that car or find all the parts to build it myself.

I'd just sigh and walk away. Because my town only has 3 dealers, ford, chevy, and dodge, and all they have on the lot are trucks and base/auto/crapbox cars. The nearest major town with interesting stuff? An hour and 10 minutes away.

You couldn't find something online within driving distance?
I mean, hell, you could still buy the most loaded out truck you could find for the $80K, park it and list it for sale. Sure, you're going to lose some value, but conservatively you'd still have $60k to re-spend.
I'm not for exploiting the questions usually, but in your case it seems okay.
![]() 01/03/2014 at 01:06 |

If it's manual, Z51 and has the magic shocks, I'm good. With 80k I could have any and all options, and even dealer markup and still pay it off with cash.
![]() 01/03/2014 at 01:41 |

Surely you can get one of these for less than $80k.

If I were extremely fortunate, the Dodge house might have a Challenger SRT8 on hand, they do very occasionally. And then I can use the extra 40 grand for a nice truck to sell like you said. Then pay off both my current cars (or as close as I can get) with the profit.

I'd buy one good condition Mercedes-Benz W113 (230SL/250SL/280SL) and keep it for some time before selling, since they appreciate, so I can buy another W113 in good condition and maybe have enough for a W114 sedan (230/250/280).

Easy - Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG in Lunar Blue Metallic. Rounds out to $80k with a couple of options picked out. And I've always wanted one, for whatever reason. I like little cars with big engines.

Drive to the Nissan dealership and by a loaded white 2014 Maxima GLE with beige interior.
